A sense of community and belonging are essential components of our physical and mental health. Healthy social connections can lead to increased happiness, decreased anxiety, and a greater feeling of purpose.
The feeling of belonging is unique to each individual. Some find it through friendships, others through spiritual practices, nature, or family. Similar to the need for food and shelter, a sense of belonging is a fundamental human need. Being part of a community can help people feel connected and engaged. Studies suggest that social connections can lead to a longer life, better health, and an overall improved sense of well-being, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
When I was growing up, social connectedness was ingrained in our daily activities. We used to play outside with the kids in our neighborhood, and our parents would chat with the neighbors. However, in today's world, people are leading busier lives, and it seems that we have limited time to feed our sense of social connection.
How are you connected to others? Do you enjoy sports events with family and friends? An afternoon outdoors soaking up nature? Volunteering at a local food pantry or shelter?
If you are looking to expand your social network and connect with others but you just don’t know where to start, here are some ideas:
1 - Identify your core values and interests. Do you love nature? Check out group activities at a state park. Are you an avid reader? Book clubs might be your thing. Do you enjoy a little competition? Game night might be right for you.
2 - Find something you like to do and do it often. Try something new once a month to broaden your interests.
3 - Remember there is a community out there for everyone.
4 - Create your own community-invite others to join you while engaging in something you enjoy. Connect around a shared purpose.
If you are experiencing feelings of loneliness or isolation, Everyday Wellbeing Occupational Therapy will work with you to build up your social support and explore any barriers to connection.
